The White Lion

The White Lion

White Lions are not ‘designed’ by man but in fact occur naturally (and only) in the Timbavati region of South Africa.

The National Zoo & Aquarium has up to 8 or so White Lions – the main group of young males born at Mogo Zoo, and a male and female pair born in South Africa.

    Hi Natalie,
What a great photo, to him pose for you and the lighting is spot on very sharp and good colour.
    Cheers Rod.

Wow.. powerful shot. I still haven’t head down there yet, but planning on doing so in and RDO coming up. Worth it?

  • Natalie Manuel replied

Can be – first day I got nothing as there was no cloud cover and their area has no shading. I had to keep going back many many times and got the best shots just before I left for good – they all came and sat next to the water’s edge. However there’s two other white lions in a different section – a young male and female, who play together and you can get nice shots of them. It’s a small zoo but worth seeing these lions, they are just amazing looking.

Did you go to Mogo or just the National Zoo?

Just the national zoo….Mogo was too hard to get to for me. Would have been nice to see the adults – hopefully next time I’ll check out Mogo, western plains and also Monarto zoo.

Hi Nat there are no white lions left in that area in south africa anymore. I work on the only reserve in the world that can now claim to have free roaming white lions . it was a breeding program set up 6 years ago and the first 4 white lions where released last year into the wild
Check out my RB site to see these awesome lions in there natural surronds

  • Natalie Manuel replied

Ah yeah, I did read they’ve been technically extinct in the wild since 94, meant to say that’s where they did occur. You’re lucky to actually see one in the wild! I hope against hope they thrive there.

we are doing everything in our power to ensure that the program is a hit. so far it is we have 2 white males and 2 white females and 2 tawny females in the wild hunting and surviving on there own

  • Natalie Manuel replied

That’s great, a relief to hear really. I am going to do a feature piece on my blog about the White Lions as I don’t think many people know that much about them, would you be interested in any interview about the conservation efforts at all? :)
