Another pinhole image, this time taken with a mailing tube camera and 10×8 inch enlarging paper cut to 9×8.

Unlike the next image, this image is considerably distorted, due to the varying focal length across the film plane and the changing angle of incidence. In this camera, the pinhole is not at the centre of curvature of the focal plane – instead, the film (or paper) curves back round closer and closer to the pinhole, so the edges of the image become increasingly distorted; the left and right edges of the image are within 1 inch of the pinhole.

In this sketch, the body of the camera is a black circle, and the film/paper is a red arc, going almost all the way round the inside of the tube.

This is fantastic! I love your mailing tube camera. Brilliant

  • Many thanks. I’m quite fond of it myself, and need to give it more exercise!
