What's in a Name, Mate? ... Alyangula
What does that place name really mean?
I am blessed (or should that be “challenged”?) with a slightly off-centre imagination and sense of humour, although some might say “unfunny”... Whatever, when the late, great Douglas Adams and John Lloyd created “The Meaning of Liff” more than a quarter of a century ago, I took to it immediately. Fast forward 20-odd years, and I now find myself living in the wonderful land that is Australia; a land replete with place names that are to become more-then-ample fodder for my mental meanderings. In the style of Adams & Lloyd, I have created a work that is effectively “Liff Down Under”, though I am not allowed to call it such; I have to content myself with “What’s in a Name, Mate?”.
For those not familiar with Liff, the premise is that certain names strike a chord, and seem to refer to another usage than just a descriptor for a geographical or civic locality. That being so, it is up to you, the reader, to determine whether or not the work is nearer to drivel than genius. It’s a subjective judgement.
This definition is so far the only one to be offered as a tee-shirt. The remainder exist – as yet – only in virtual form. I hope to change that before too long.
