Very nice crepuscular rays :)
micmac
I read that you are a specialist of the sky phenomenas ,is it true that when we have those rays«pieds de vents» in french ,it’s gone be windy the day after..?My mother who was living near the sea realy beleive that. It’s a beautiful shot.
Duncan Waldron
Thanks micmac. Sorry, I can’t give a definitive answer to that, although I doubt it’s the case the two phenomena are connected. You just need sunlight shining through gaps in the cloud, with either haze or dust in the atmosphere to show up the rays, and I wouldn’t say either is particularly a predictor for wind.
I’m surprised that the rays are pieds de vents, when the English name is derived from the French crepuscule! Wind feet doesn’t sound so good.
I saw a brilliant display recently, which stretched all the way from one horizon to the other. Anticrepuscular arys aren’t uncommon, but I’ve never seen them stretch across the whole sky so strongly. Didn’t have a camera handy :(

Joaquin Loyzaga
fantastic vista!, great shot!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Joaquin; it was just one of those “must have” scenes!
Lenka
Wow! Now this is beautiful! Great tonality, lovely in B&W, and those sunbeams are simply amazing!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Lenka. Sometimes I feel I’ve over-dramatised the clouds in this, but it was a pretty spectacular scene.
Lenka
It looks pretty dramatic, but I love the atmosphere! I’ve only seemed this kind of dramatic skies over mountain once with my own eyes, several years ago in Switzerland. It was truly stunning view and your capture reminds me of that :)
Christine Wilson
love the mood here very nice work
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Christine :)
Simon Whittaker
Sensational work Duncan, an instant fav for me!
Duncan Waldron replied
Why thank you kindly, old chap. Makes me restless for the days of 120 film, chemicals and a good darkroom…

beautiful b&w!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Shahriar. Always loved B&W printing, and I seem to be favouring it even in this digital age!
morpheus71
Beautiful black & white! Very peaceful image – congratulations on the Home Page feature
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Morpheus (how’s Neo…?). I’d quite like to go back and re-shoot it as a panorama, but this was a quick grab shot while I was meant to be working. (I should look out the negs to see if I might have taken any more.)

Love the ethereal softness of the background ridges.
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks. Sometimes I wonder if I was too heavy on the printing, so glad you find it ethereal :))
Paul (Quixote)...
A real beauty. Love the tones and lighting, and the superb composition
Duncan Waldron replied
Many thanks Paul :) Seemed a shame to waste half of a 6×6 neg, but had to do it that way.
Desiree Salas

Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Desiree – sorry to impede your breathing… :D
Jan Timmons
I’m delighted that I checked the homepage in time to see these crepuscular rays. (I’m simply quoting you and PigleT. I will google the term.) Love the phenomenon and your layers and shades of mountains horizontally with the angled rays of light. Beautiful blacks and shades of grey.
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Jan – nearly didn’t check it myself. I had decided to have an evening away from the PC, but didn’t make it!
Revive The Lig...
Very powerful shot, especially in black and white! Great capture Duncan!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks RTL. I saw a forum comment recently (not RB) from someone who reckoned that if photography had started as a colour process, we would never be making BW images, but sometimes, it’s best to remove the colour and concentrate on form, light and shade.
