exquisite work….

Many thanks Karen :) It didn’t seem “exquisite” when I first had the neg scanned, but the possibilities were definitely there, although it took me a while to get to this point.

This is amazing Duncan, Did you make the pin hole camera yourself. I realise it can be hard to get a good exposure using pinhiles. The Orton Effect is perfect for this kind of shot! I accidently srtatied using the Orton effect while experienting in Photoshop before I realised that this came about origonaly by putting two transparancies together (both over exposed , one in focus and one out of focus)! It’s a little ealier digitally though. Well done!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thanks Norm. It was an old rangefinder camera that I decided to modify. Pinhole is good fun, but having to reload the camera every time you make an exposure is a bit of a hassle, so I wanted a camera that would take a full roll of film. Felt slightly uncomfortable hacking the lens off that camera, but at least It would still be a working camera!
Getting the exposure right is fairly straightforward, as long as you know the aperture and focal distance, and have a meter (good old Weston III is still going strong!). Getting the framing right, and a decent picture at the end of the process… well, that’s another matter, and luck plays its part.
Like you, I’d been mucking about with Orton-like effects for a while, before I found it had a name. I’d also used in-camera double exposure with one exposure defocused, a long time ago, but doubt I still have many worthwhile pics from that era.
What you doing over Chrissie? We might yet meet over a lens and cuppa… BM me if you want to arrange something.

this is so compelling…draws you right in, yet wonderful sense of space and freedom…beautiful!
Duncan Waldron replied
Thank you Louise. It’s one that has really grown on me, although the original straight print has less effect than this well-processed one.
