Remember ‘THE WORLD AROUND US’ ~ for some you may be too young to remember ~ for others too old… but for many of ‘this generation’ ~ growing up in the 70’s and 80’s… we remember it well.
The World Around Us was an Australian documentary television series that aired on the Seven Network. It regularly showed documentaries which featured the likes of Malcolm Douglas and Sir David Attenborough.
Both science fictionists such as Arthur C. Clarke and ‘real’ environmental scientists such as Attenborough and film-makers like Douglas even then ~ suggested that the World around us would change quickly.
Yet now it is a FACT ~ that ‘our’ World is changing more vastly and rapidly than predicted in the 80’s. It the RATE of CHANGE ~ that is unprecedented and in the words of Attenborough ~ extraordinary!!!
In the concluding part of ‘State of the Planet’ David comments ~ “The future of life on earth depends on our ability to take action. Many individuals are doing what they can, but real success can only come if there’s a change in our societies and our economics and in our politics. I’ve been lucky in my lifetime to see some of the greatest spectacles that the natural world has to offer. Surely we have a responsibility to leave for future generations a planet that is healthy, inhabitable by all species”…
Science, engineering and IT technologies ~ that we could only DREAM of and ideas of the futurist Arthur C. Clarke ~ are now becoming REALITY and to some extent are ‘moulding’ our PLANET.
Along with these advances in technologies ~ some forget that the ‘basic infrastructure’ that supports us ~ is being polluted, fished, trawled, bombed, poisoned and acidified!
These are the technology problems that we need to solve ~ right now!
Not the technology advances and deemed needs of the consumerist World.
We need to prepare for provisions of the ‘basics’ ~ which still seem to evade millions of us on the Planet ~ that of POTABLE WATER, SAFE SHELTER and UNTAINTED FOOD.
So before you continue with your next engineering project ~ spare a though for the life of ANEMONE C. CLARK!
