A beautiful ‘Seapen’ sits in a sandy area of the Brunei Bay North Borneo ~ where some would think very little exists ~ but on the sandy seabed ‘life is amass in all varieties’ and ‘abundance’ ~ there seems nothing there till you ~ ‘really’ look!

These colonial marine ‘cnidarians’ belong to the order Pennatulacea.

Sea pens are “soft corals” together with sea whips and gorgonians (octocorals).

Named after their feather-like appearance reminiscent of ‘antique quill pens’ they stick out of the sand ~ almost as if Shakespeare himself dotted them in ~ like darts!

As a Marine Scientist, Underwater Photographer, Wildlife Conservation FilmMaker & emerging Explorer ~ Nicks’ recent film “Colours of the Gulf” documented the plight of whale sharks and other marine life in the aftermath of the Gulf oil spill.
