A WORLD OF INSECTS

Artist's Description

An underwater shot of a ‘Phasmid’ stick insect ~ trapped to water by surface tension and the ‘meniscal’ forces of water-bubbles underneath its wings…

The ordinal name is derived from the Ancient Greek “phasma” meaning an apparition or phantom ~ as their natural camouflage can make them extremely difficult to spot in the wild.

There are in excess of 3,000 described species, with many more yet to be described. Most species are found in the tropics.
