Portrait of my Great Grandmother

Featured in ‘Southern United States Artists’

Painted in the style of Van Gogh after doing a study of him

My sister, Mary Carolyn, the smart one in the family, told me our great grandmother had 10 children and was a hard working, no nonsense woman of few words who said what she meant and meant what she said, but was also kind and fair.

This was painted from an old black and white photo. It looked as though she had a tweed jacket on so I thought Van Gogh’s Self Portrait would suit her jacket well.

Yes, it did. I painted this in 1999 and I remember it seemed like forever to paint that jacket…..:)

Hello Shylie…..thank you so much. This was painted from an old black and white photo and this is what she is wearing in the photo….just wasn’t sure what color the jacket was, but it did look to be tweed. Thank you again for commenting :)

What a wonderful portrait. To answer your question, no I didn’t paint whilst I was there, I am very much a studio painter who makes an awful mess whilst working and I think I would have been deported because of it.

What a strong and dignified lady – I really love your portraits because they are painted with such passion and great feeling. There is a resemblance between you – I think the shape of the face is very similar to yours.

  • Deborah Glasgow replied 20 days ago

Yes, that is what I’ve been told by my family. I never knew her. Painted her after Van Gogh’s ‘self portrait’ and another one ‘Old Peasant’. I painted this 10 years ago when I was studing Van Gogh. The man was brillant and what a pitiful life he had. Thank you for commenting, Julie-Ann

a good act to follow, he seeps into my art off and on too, i love him,for the battle against rejections from every corner of his life and in the end self, rejection,i have seen many of his original art pieces and could not walk away, i wanted so bad to touch his mom,s painting, he did, when i saw it-alone one day,may he has his powers, but in a more peaceful way,she is a master work from your heart

  • Deborah Glasgow replied 19 days ago

So true, Walt. I have always admired him and thought it would be fun to do something like this. I appreciate him even more because it took me a very long time to do the jacket and he whipped out paintings in one day. But, I learned a lot by painting this.

A real talent to “get” the reality from a black & white and family history and translate it into a powerful image like this. I bet she would like it…
