Siena's Duomo-Tuscany by Deborah Downes

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Siena’s majestic duomo sits on a site where a Roman temple to Minerva once stood. Its spectacular façade was constructed between 1284 and 1296, and was largely the work of the Pisan architect and sculptor Giovanna Pisano. When the cathedral neared completion, a major addition was added to the original plan. Plague and economic strife brought construction to a halt. In the late 1300’s the dumo was completed according to the original plan. The parts of the addition that were built remain standing.

My life as a global nomad (about 22 years) continues to influence my writing and photography. When I lived in Shanghai, I went through a sea change of sorts, resulting in a major shift in my writing (from fiction to memoir) and a great new love, photography. Currently my husband and I live in Garland, Texas, near our daughter, son-in-law and two granddaughters.

Your knowledge of your surroundings is immense, my lady. Incredible history at your fingertips. Love your narratives.

  • Thanks so much, my friend. As far as my knowledge of Italian history, it all boils down to excellent resources. Just no way I can remember all I hear about and read:)

One of my favourite spaces. Love this place. Was there 25 years ago and this summer. More tourists than ever now!

  • Love it, too. There are still times of the year you can go there when it’s not overly crowded. Thanks for your comment, Steve.
