Portrait of Courage - Lumo
Facing life front on.
Her name is Lumo. She is in her early twenty, she suffers a condition called fistula. This renders her incontinent. Although, this condition is caused mostly due to difficult childbirth. A small number of women in congo has this condition due to severe assault inflicted to her by rebels. She was only twenty when it happened to her. She was engaged to be married but abandoned because of her illness. When I met her, She was waiting for surgery at heal africa…... for the sixth time. She is waiting and hoping may be the next one will heal her. She is a picture of courage.
PS: She was film and featured by the goma film project that had won several awards (human rights watch – 2007 international film festival)

Lumo has a gorgeous face, but you can see in her eyes she has had a hard life even before I read your moving description. I’m man enough to admit I teared up on reading about her experience. Thank you for sharing Rebecca.
