I saw this lady in the clinic in indonesia. She is in her late thirty and on her sixth pregnancy. Her husband is a farmer who works casually depending on work availability. She came to the clinic due to pregnancy complication. We transfer her to the regional hospital for on going care.
She went on to have a healthy baby boy.
We saw her again the next day, they wanted to go home early so they don’t have to pay too much. Her husband went to the cashier and was handed a piece of paper with the total cost of the hospital stay. He turned around to go back to her, meanwhile trying to avoid looking at us in the eyes. His face said it all. ‘How could I pay this?” the lines on his face seemed to scream out.
It was Rp 429.600 (around AUD$50). All he had in his possession is a mere Rp 200,000. That is all….
She knew how things were. Her face said….I love you son…..I truly am….but I am sorry that it will be hard…. but I will do my best to protect you.

What a touching story this is, and a beautiful photo. I think we take for granted our public health system in Australia where a mother can give birth, and walk out of the hospital after 3 – 5 days and not pay a cent. I’m blessed to live here…thanks for reminding me of that!
