This tree is another in my series of graffiti trees that I photographed in Topanga State Forest in Los Angeles, CA. Primitive images particularily on trees are reminiscent of paleolithic cave paintings. This type of iconography has been seen in the cave of Lascaux that is particularily fascinating for those interested in prehistoric art. The icons are particulary well defined on this tree.
Thanks Meach. I have always been fascinated with primitive art and have many photos of primitive “redbubble” iconography on trees. This form of collective art can produce some fascinating imagery reminiscent of the time when cave men communicated in visual symbols.
the three figures at the top are so well defined, but the central one really draws me…..like he/she is preaching or holding hands up to give a message…. from the corner of my eye, that central orange/red streak is a big red kangaroo in full flight! (aussie aussie aussie…oi oi oi!)
Wendy, You are exceptionally perceptive seeing the nuance and the less obvious icons in my photographs. Iconic vision is a gift that can be developed, but some of us have more visual acuity than others, especially artists and photographers. We see the tree before the forest. Suddenly faces jump out at us and we perceive things we would not have before since we are looking at the world from a different perspective.
i see two Horses, top, right, at the left looks to be a type of tool, or maybe a musical instrument, & below that a man doing a tibal dance. Beautiful Julie
So, Julie… It’s my understanding that the prehistoric people were probably under the influence of mind-altering when they made their artistic spiritual connection to their natural world. Certain mushrooms are proposed as drug source. Of course I am NOT, implying that you were not of firm mind… honest!! However, I AM wondering about the single-cell creatures on your cave wall… I was able to identify the horses and deer painted by primative people. AAAAaaaaaaaaah, I get it now. You have reversed things, being a modern person painting primative animals. Very clever! :) :)
