The Old, The New, Backcove New Harbor Maine by

This image was made in Back Cove in New Harbor, Maine, early on a February morning. The low light and positions of the boats attracted me to the scene. The wooden boat is a Monhegan skiff and is specially designed to be used to get on and off the lobster boats in rough weather. These boats are handcrafted on the island, and many of the onshore fishermen also use them because they’re so stable. This boat is also easily sculled. In this particular harbor most of fishermen stand up and scull to their boats; they do not row to them. Well, what can you say about the other boat besides it’s fiberglass? This is a digital painting done from a photograph using the mixing brush in Photoshop. there are tutorials on this process on my site
