Yes, this is the notorious Portland Headlight, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. However, this image was taken from the opposite side from which the traditional shots are made. There is another rocky headland in between the camera and the lighthouse, and it was a very foggy day. The original image was shot about 30 years ago with a 4 × 5 camera on black-and-white film. I have always liked the original image but it was too grainy to be used for anything. Then I scanned it into the computer and used it as the basis for this digital painting. It is so much more powerful than the original image.Maine is just full of lighthouses. The challenge is to try and photograph them in such a way that they don’t look like everybody else’s lighthouse picture. I usually try and find a way to either photograph pieces of the lighthouses or to photograph them from positions that others have not used before.
