Rebirth of Instant POLAROID - The Joy and Fun is Back! by Solomon Walker

Posted on November 12, 2011

Who doesn’t love the classic instant snap and develop innovations of Polaroid cameras and films? I think anyone who has ever had an early inkling for capturing images made with a fun and affordable camera has very fond memories of Polaroid cameras. They are truly unique.

Well, as many folks know, Polaroid officially stopped making its instant film sometime back in 2007. It was a disappointing end to over 60 years of fun-filled captured memories ranging from family vacations, new births, joyful birthdays, Christmas celebrations, plus so much more. There may never be anything like it again.

Back in 2008, I re-published an article on my Scribd page, written by Geoff Dyer, which re-capped a bit of history from one of modern technology’s best breakthroughs, that impacted millions of people and their lives worldwide. Back then, I too was ready to say goodbye to Polaroid, though I kept my old Spectra on a bookshelf at home as a memento. I just couldn’t part with it – yet.

To my surprise, a couple of weeks ago, I received an unusual email (I am on so many company email lists – I cant keep up!) which had links to various new and innovative technology. And, being the ‘curious george’ I am usually, I followed some of the links. At some point I ended up at a website with a title in huge b&w fonts that read ImPossible. I was about to close the page, thinking that this site was a gimmick. But, when I noticed unusual but captivating images of people and products, I decided to browse a little (its a really BEAUTIFUL website!). The name Polaroid kept popping up (as it never does anymore), so, I wanted to know why. And after a while I found the answer.

Thanks to some of Polaroid’s former managers, engineers and employees, who took over one of the original company buildings in Germany, the instant exposure film has new life! ImPossible has revived, and is reproducing better products for previous generations, plus a whole new generation of photo enthusiasts!

Please do visit ImPossiblehttp://www.the-impossible-project.com/ – and witness for yourself the re-making of something extra special, which will continue to impact people’s lives for generations more.

Keep on shooting great pictures, everyone!
