Toilet Monster

Garth Horsfield

Toilet Monster

This tongue in cheek little collage is an obvious nod to Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”. It also comes from a totally irrational fear I had as a child of toilets… a small print hung in the lav would undoubtedly elicit a chuckle.

Most of your work echoes something sinister and dark (in a good, creatively you way). This is exactly the opposite and that’s what made it stand out for me. Smile.

It is soooooooooooooo comforting to see so many people had the same irrational fear I had! Mine stemmed from childhood horror stories, probably from mean older family members, that things come up toilets like rats, spiders and snakes.

The worst part is that I can barely ‘go’ in a public restroom to this very day. I mean, are we SURE there’s nothing coming up there? If so, sing with me: “Where have all the monsters gone? Long time passing…”

Is a cute pic man. Pretty cool. I think it is awesome that you have been able to achieve so many artistic things. I am still on my way to getting there(One day I woke up and realized the cause for my depression I wasn’t following my heart and my dreams therefore left me a very sad and lonely man…ever since I have dived back into art and started a new medium(painting) The paintings you see are like the 8th or 9th paintings I have ever done in my life. Hah So it is completely new. I am more inspired and happy and proud of myself who cares if anyone likes it at all, It makes me feel good) and hopefully I will be able to one day. I also drew my own rendition of The Scream except I borrowed way more from the original piece lol. Damn near copied it but put my own spin on it. Check it out. I looked at your other art as well, it is all brilliant.

wonderful work, love it. i remember using an outhouse (long drop if you’re from Oz) as a kid on a camping trip. I was already freaked out in the dark and then sometime bumped the wall and I jumped off in the middle of my business, so I understand the fear. I’m actually wondering if I should now click on the ‘add comment’ button…??

  • Garth Horsfield replied

Hahaha, I’m relieved that I’m not the only one with odd childhood phobias…

Hahahaha oh Garth this is too much lol… totally LOVE it. You had a fear of loos too? I have no idea why I had mine but maybe it was something to do with those composting toilets and thinking of that big hole underneath and me suspended over it on a thin wooden floor! Yikes….........

And what I meant to say was – congrats on the sale lol :) :)

  • Garth Horsfield replied

Heh, thanks so much rightasrain. It’s a strange thing our little phobias, but for some reason a blocked toilet would make me run screaming from the lav when I was little.
