Boy in Shadow
A fairly classical life drawing study using acrylic, compressed charcoal on paper… I was experiementing with dark shadows and moody lighting. Most of the people in my drawings were friends I hung around with at art school… none of us had money for models so we just drew each other.
Boy in Shadow belongs to the following groups:
1 on 1: The Fine Art of Portraiture , Back In Black ( sorry~NO PHOTOGRAPHY), Dirty Filthy Art: Charcoal, Men Appreciation and The Male Nude Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

Garth, your very talented brother
Garth Horsfield replied
Thanks Morris… I haven’t done much art lately so I’m trying to get myself motivated – comments like that sure help.

Nicely done! I love the strong light and the strong shadows.
What’s compressed charcoal? (Sorry, I’m only new to art…)
Garth Horsfield replied
It’s just a round stick like a dry pastel, but it’s made of real charcoal compressed into a hard stick. It’s deeply black, comes in different hardnesses and can be erased from paper somewhat…

HOT! Great Job! I love the chin, upper lip, and right eye! :-)
Garth Horsfield replied
Thanx… all with the aid of some cheap bed lamps for lighting. He was great at holding still – I know how hard it is.

Garth I love how you drew this. Not only the features but also how you played with shadows. Amazing work.
Garth Horsfield replied
Thanks Jonathan… I confess I’ve been a bit slack with my art lately, but encouraging comments always make me feel like doing some more work. (You’d make a great subject I don’t mind saying) :)

Mr. Horsfield – with such talent as yours I do hope that your muse not only finds you once more but courts you passionately!
