This build up was looking quite promising there for a while then failed to deliver. I thought I’d be stuck hiding under a rock at Currumbin Alley as this approached. It delivered little rain and a few Lightning Strikes in the general direction of the sunset.
I had come here to shoot a landscape so the build up was an added bonus

I’m Derek, Gold Coast Photographer who now spends more time at FaceBook than here.

Sometimes I take pretty pictures.

Wow – that’s an awesome cloud formation! Great comp! :)

  • Thank you. The wind did certainly pick up and my camera suffered a fall with the tripod. Lucky I had a filter on(now dead) and slight cracking around the front of the lens(glass is fine).
Gives me something decent for my project.

Nice one mate, looks like that cloud is just flooding what’s left of the clear sky.

  • Thanks, it did cover a fair bit of the sky down to Coolangatta Airport. Rest headed out to sea.

Woah! Those clouds are fantastic, pity nothing much transpired, still a great capture though mate.

  • Thanks. I had to seek shelter from wind and rain below the rock. There were a few decent Lightning Strikes overhead – more over the Hinterland though.

ohhh nice work drec:) I can see why you were expecting some action here :)

  • It’s been quiet on the Coast so it was fun to be out watching some storm activity. Bit more rain would have done wonders for my tank.

Well, your looking at a Shelf Cloud. The storm at this point has become outflow dominant, meaning the chances for a Tube, are Very minimal. Its still a nice shot Bro!! Well done!

  • Cheers Mate – Need your knowledge out here one day. There’s potential tomorrow and Friday for some more afternoon storms – I’d prefer a little closer to sunset for ease of shooting.

Awsome capture Drec. It has a real nice front on it. The building gives a scope of how big it was. Pity you didn’t get that much action from inside of it. Awsome composition. Well done mate!!!

  • Thank you. There’s always tomorrow……I originally was coming here to shoot a few seascapes, the build up was an added bonus.

Awww….C’mon, whats the fun in an easy chase!!! Sometimes Ma’ Nature makes you work for those treasured shots! Here in the states, we’re expecting a BIG time Freezing rain/Sleet/BIG TIME snow event Starting Thursday. Were expecting massive power outages and major destruction! I am going to try and put myself in the middle of it, to get some decent winter shots!

  • Today wasn’t planned – happened to be down here talking to an Art Gallery owner who’d like to display my work. This spot I’ll return to – though don’t know how safe it’d be hiding under a large rock, surrounded by water. Friday Night I’ll be 40 plus floors up in a Penthouse for the night. Now if storms roll through I’ll shoot of the balcony.

Ouch, I know how quickly the wind can whip up from nowhere – hope your gear’s insured…take care on your next shoot. :))

  • The lens still focuses but resale value has plummeted. 22 GB pounds of filter destroyed but it did save my camera.
