Murphy's Law
Lightning was striking middle and to the right of this frame and not much was landing over the Hi-Rises of Surfers Paradise. I made sure I had Q1 just inside the frame and it managed to get hit, I caught half of the bolt but missed the half that went left.
This spot has potential, just need the storms to not drift so far south.

Fantastic Drec!!! And you are alive!! It certainly was a beauty of a storm, aye!!! The thunder shook the inside of my ceiling fans!!! Wooo!!
drec replied
It sort of missed Southport a bit. Except for one bolt that started near GC Hospital and landed somewhere in the ocean and sounded like a jet. I was talking to a GC Bully Photographer, be interesting to see what he got(might be Friday paper)

Awesome lightning strike capture Drec, A wonderful image indeed.

Cheers Mate. There were a few big strikes close by – house caught fire 4.5km away from where we were standing.

Fabulous, hope to be able to take one some day …

Thank you. After catching my first one, I was addicted.

Still an awesome capture. Glad that you were safe. Excellent in my books.
drec replied
Thank you. When out chasing, I do like to have some form of cover close by to hide.

Awesome image!!! Great work finding this area!!!!

Thanks. Given the right conditions this spot will be popular for Storm Photography(any type really). There’s a couple of other structures I’ll check out for shelter round here.

excellent – we didn’t hear to much of it but then again I was so asleep I didn’t hear much of anything! hopefully some more on the way, cheers Paul

Thanks, It appeared to slide down the coast – saying that a house 4.5km away did get hit

FANTASTIC! Love how it is hitting the rod on the building! Salute!
drec replied
Thank you. I should remember; Point camera at Q1. It’s a pretty good lightning rod.

great shot, I was at Kangaroo point for 5 hours and got nothing

Cheers. The storm did appear to collapse near Brisbane but at last crossed down my way. Got to head out Beaudesert way and chase from there soon.

Excellent shot Drec. I hope there’s more to come after I get home. Not that I’m in any hurry at the moment. Been having a dream run. Not doing too much in the way of fussy landscapes but getting lots of wildlife shots. On the way to The Arches N.P. in Utah tomorrow. Not a lot of wildlife there so I’ll be able to slow down a bit.:)
drec replied
Don’t blame you for being in no rush to come home. There’s thundery rain now and potential showers for a couple of days. The waterfalls should be starting to look a lot better now to.

congratulations this is a Fantastic Capture.. Well done!

I knew this would be your masterpiece drec, great capture!!

This was a trial run at the newly built Pier. It should provide a good vantage spot this season.

Nice capture mate, looks like a crazy storm! Was still fierce when it got to Brissy too.
drec replied
Thank you, I’ll return here again for sure. Might check the other side for the nearest shelter this week-end and get a couple of spots worked out.
Matt Duncan
Nicely captured Drec. Excellent detail and colour in the lightning.
I know the pain of composing a shot, and then watch as strikes miss filling the frame. So you have my sympathy too. :)
Good luck with the new vantage point, and look forward to seeing more in the season. :)

Thanks, it’s all part of the fun. This jetty(and the rest of the park) has some pretty decent views of the Broadwater and down to Surfers with shelter. Friday might be another storm. If only predictions were accurate.

Still a beauty! Looks Fantastic in the larger view! Nice one, Drec!
drec replied
Thank you. At least I got it hitting the building. I’ll leave bit more room on right side of Q1 next time.

Was this last week mate. We had a great light show. Nice shot :)

Thanks, this was from the 5th of November. A similar shot was published on the 7/8th GC week-end Bulletin – I was lucky I got a little more into the frame than the Paper’s Photographer.

Whoa – that’s a terrific capture. It looks close though ;0)

Thanks, it’s not too far away(guess 4 maybe 5km’s). A house did get struck and lost it’s roof in this storm around 4 km’s away -that was quite a very large bang.
