This formidable castle was built on the edge of a very high cliff face overlooking the Welsh country side. That view is on the far side from this one. Built in the 13th century, it sits on what is believed to be a site used by the Romans, and prehistoric peoples. This is usual for most castle sites, that began as hill top forts with earthen ridges and channels, with huts inside those rings, then as the years progressed usually had wooden walls added, with a central Keep. In the later years, the many different invading forces introduced different styles, to a point where huge fortifications, having a number of different wall sections, were built, and this is what can be seen throughout the UK. Unfortunately, some of the wars between countries in the UK, and the parlimentary wars, has led to the distruction of these beautiful places.
