Electrifying
Taken in Victoria on one balmy summers evening. This is uncropped, as it appeared when developed. Part luck, part application of knowledge.
Lightning can be difficult to capture, although I apply a couple of simple rules.
Unless the storm is coming straight at you, I tend to concentrate on the start and end of the storm area. I use a wide angle lense, a tripod, and set my camera film speed to ISO 100. I use a cable release, and for night time, which is the only time I take lightning shots, I set the aperture on f9 and the shutter to bulb, with an exposure of 3 to 4 minutes. The time can depend on storm intensity (amount of light created). Others may have different rules, but this generally does work for me, and with the digital age, you do have the ability to check, unlike film, where you had to wait to see if it was a worth while evening.

Really well done, a good lightning shot is tough – I don’t think there was too much luck involved. Excellent work!

We have some amazing storms in good old Victoria. I’m yet to get my lightning photo.
This is amazing. Thanks for the tips, I’ll put those into action when I find a good storm. :) x

Thanks for your tips. I’ve written them down in my book that I keep in my camera bag – which is continually with me where ever I go….. What an amazing photo.

Awesome great colour and capture of the lightning. I like the glow on the water

This was definately one of those, right place, right time shots, and has only been cropped a small amount. It was an old film one.
Rikki Pool
Nice shot Mark, was this taken in November 2007?
Mark Jones replied
Hi Rikki.
No this was taken some years ago when I used film and not digital, and you had to wait to get it developed before you knew what you had got. I unfortunately have not been lucky enough to get anything new for some time now.

Thankyou Pete.
I am waiting for this summer to really give the lightning more concentrated go. It’s been a couple of years since I really tried hard to get out and capture some.
