Flypaper

I’m laying on the beach taking in the sun and sounds of the waves crashing on the sand. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my first memories of visiting grandpa in Florida. We brought some seashells home with us so we could always have the sound of the ocean with us in Ohio. The difference now is that I’m all grown up with a family of my own and I have my wife next to me to enjoy our wonderful vacation. We’re going to eat at a local seafood restaurant tonight and then go to the club that’s set up right on the beach. We’ll have wonderfully large glasses of some island concoction and dance the night away. We don’t have a care in the world because we’re finally free from everything. Our own private little world where life and bills don’t matter…Hey, where did the sun go? Somebody’s child has just replaced my rays of sunlight with his cast shadow. Looking up from the ground, this young child seems to tower over me. He appears to be opening his mouth to say something but all I hear is an all too familiar beeping sound that seems to be getting louder…My vacation is over!! That horrible beeping sound is my alarm clock and I’m still in Afghanistan. I don’t wake up to my wife’s beautiful face every morning in this place. Instead I wake up to the flypaper hanging over my bed…
