Books Describe Vampires As Extremely Pale Skinned...

Yes, I did actually manage to read all 4 massive books in the ‘Twilight’ series while my computer was ‘sick’. So – for a bit of ‘light relief’ – my take on the traditional ‘vampire’.

I know this one doesn’t actually ‘match’ any of the wonderful vampire characters in ‘Twilight’ (by Stephanie Meyer) – the only vampire there with flaming red hair definitely comes across as a ‘bad guy’ – not one willing or able to join the good, ‘vegetarian vampire coven’ that the story is based around.
But – I just couldn’t see myself creating an image of something with fangs and a lot of fake blood – so bright red hair has to substitute. A ‘vampire’ maybe not willing or able to clearly show him or herself as she is to the outside non-supernatural world?

A composite image created from many of my own photographs.

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thanks so much Aglaia! Glad to hear I’m not letting down the overall standard lol! This one was simply fun – now that I’m able to keep up with my daughter in conversations about the plot line of ‘Twilight’ and all kinds of stories of vampires – much to her delight :)))

Lovely K. Love that you have used a bit of colour…even if it is substitute blood …lol

  • DragonFlyer replied

A ‘bit’ of colour she says??? A BIT??? This is several layers of 100% Super brightest orange / red!!!! (and green, and purple, and blue, and cyan, and…. I forget what else…. but A ‘BIT’? And don’t you think it’s more elegant than ‘fake blood’ lol ;)))

    Love the fire hair colour!
Haven’t sussed out Twilght but WOW … a ‘good’ vegetarian vampire coven. hmmmm sounds like its taking all the fun out of being a vampire… I think I might stick with Bram Stoker’s version ;)

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thanks Matt! I like the hair too – turns out ‘vegetarian vampires’ only hunt mountain lions and bears, they don’t kill humans… though there’s plenty of ‘almost getting killed’ – and there are distinct advantages to being able to see glimpses of the future trends in the stock market when you are immortal LOL ;)))

Am not a Twilight fan at all; but this pcture striked me and if i set i aside my differences with the Twilight series; this pic qualifies as a favourite for me. Liked you explanation for the vampires and how you substituted the fangs or blood thingee! There may not a famous (any one i can remember now) red haired vampire characters out there but red hair was considered once a sign of bestiality or sexuality and was associated to witches or warewolves and vampires.
Once again great photo; loved the thing you did with your hand there!

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thank you for the info re past associations with ‘red hair’! It’s my daughter who is the REAL ‘Twilight’ fan (she’s 12)... And, as I think I’ve mentioned, this image really was made just for fun – I’m very happy you like it ;)))

This is a great pic! I love it and appreciate it all the more now I know your back story and Twilight link as I am currently reading the 3rd book and cannot help but be inspired by it. One of my shots called ‘The Bell Tower’ was inspired by Jacob and the Werewolves – check it out if you are interested. Keep up the inspiring work – it helps…

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thanks very much Sherene – the supernatural world is a great one to escape to – isn’t it :)))

You know what… when I first watched the movie I was dissapointed (I think I heard too much hype) but have since watched it again and liked it more the second time round. I didn’t realise there were so many books so of course more detail of the characters will come out in the sequal movies (I know.. I must have been living under a rock not to know that). I’m borrowing the books off my sister in law cause I love a good read… the books will probably turn me into more of a Twilight fan :)
This is a gorgeous image!! I really love it.

  • DragonFlyer replied

thanks lots Pip! This image was really just fun. I quite liked the books – they are certainly well-written, and yes, there is TONS more character development (they’re VERY FAT books too LOL)... Though – I found them a little disappointing in the end, as despite heaps of massive suspense and terrible things about to happen, NONE of them ever do and it’s totally super happy endings all around. I’d never thought of this before, but I feel like a little ‘tragedy’ IS needed to balance the overwhelming ‘happily ever after’... (though some of the characters are so cool – I think I’m a bit of a fan anyway ;)))

  • Cathleen Tarawhiti

    Cathleen Taraw...

I like your shift from the classic vampire look :) The composition is very interesting.

  • DragonFlyer replied

thanks Cathleen – I think ‘classic looks’ can at times become a little cliche (maybe)... and thank you for your comment re the composition… I actually focus very strongly on that aspect of my work, and, though I think I ‘know the rules’ etc, I go much more on ‘feel’, and only refer back to what I consciously ‘know’ if I feel something is not working…

  • Shoaib .

    Shoaib .

whoa .. this is so damn awesome
i think the red is striking and subtle … i will say i thought the MOVIE twilight left a LOT to be desired lol i m sure the books are better… great work here

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thanks Shoaib! I just COULDN ‘T make myself be ‘blatant’ on this theme lol… And – yes, the books ARE better – quite a good read. But – IMO they have 1 major deficiency as well… a REALLY powerful story just CAN’T be ONLY and TOTALLY a perfect supernaturally happy ending, where – despite heaps of massive suspense – absolutely NOTHING REALLY BAD actually ends up happening in the end….. Bit ‘too good to be true’ for me lol ;)))

  • parmi

    parmi

There are really no words for how awesome this is and how thankful I am that you have recreated the traditional vampire! Red hair vs red blood, I LOVE it!

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thank you so so much for your lovely comment parmi! i just COULDN’T make myself do the ‘fangs’ bit lol ;)))

  • BiographyofRed8

    BiographyofRed8

i think this image is beautiful whether it is about a vampire or inresponse to reading vampire fiction, the hair twisted that way gives the image such a mystical and yet earthy feeling at the same time, whilst the backdrop does add a sense of twilight, or un-realness to the color of her skin

    beautiful work!

  • DragonFlyer replied

Thanks so much BofRed! you’re actually right – this image was shot as part of the big shoot I did for the ‘Control’ series… I just started mucking around with it as I had commented I might start making pictures of vampires after reading the Twilight books while my computer was in hospital… I’m glad you think it’s beautiful – it feels a little strange for me, as the colouring – to make it go with the ‘vampire’ fun theme – is very unusual feeling for me. i’m very happy to hear from you that it has come out well :)))
    Thank you!
