Going Home. Fitzroy North.
This alleyway is located directly opposite where I have been picking up either one or both of my children from school for the past 8 years…. It has the feel of a very familiar and friendly place. The ‘locals’ who ask for a dollar or two for their next hit reasonably regularly quite understand if some of the time I can’t help them out….
Every now and then I’d mention to my son that it would be really good to get a photo of this alley, and he’d keep on telling me – ‘But Muum – you should have your camera with you ALL THE TIME’. He’s right.
Sony Alpha 350, Tokina 19-35mm Lens, Focal Length 24mm @ f4.0, 1/50 Sec Exp, ISO 400.
Taken in July (mid-winter) just as the evening light was fading at a great rate, and it was just beginning to rain a little…
O – and I just have to add again, that this image looks LOTS better LARGE… :)))

Nice work, K. Makes me homesick :(
DragonFlyer replied
Thanks Colleen – I’m sure you’ll get back one day…. (PS – I just replaced the version you viewed with one with slightly higher contrast… I thought it looked lots too flat when I saw it up here)

It looks great, sweetie. I’ve recently discovered that what I see on my screen differs from what others see – apparently I need to callibrate my screen… bugger! I’ve been given a couple of links to do this, but can’t do it until I have more disk space as I’ve run out!
DragonFlyer replied
For me it happens sometimes, and I don’t know why only sometimes – that doesn’t seem to make sense…
And I’m in exactly the same boat as you re disk space – My computer regularly now just suddenly says STOP – and that’s it until I can dump another few hundred images that I have to decide are duds and I’ll never do anything with… :(((

great work DF, love the darkness, the composition , awesome detail, the light source and the blue graffiti add so much as well. ;-) xox
DragonFlyer replied
Thanks lots Aglaia – this isn’t the kind of image I’ve had any practice putting together – but I just had to as I really love Fitzroy so much…

Thanks so much! I tried – took a fair few from different perspectives – liked this angle the best – and the lovely warm light from the cafe window across the road at the other end was an added bonus :)))

wow Kallena! this looks 3D to me!! you have done an amazing job here, I love how you have made it so moody with the bits of blue coming through….sheer brilliance xxxx my children say the same, I always say oh that’s would be a great picture but never have the camera with me at the right time. It’s become my most treasured possesion xxxx
DragonFlyer replied
Yes! Have to take it always…. I’m glad you like how this turned out – as you might have noticed I’ve not had much experience with this type of image lol…

well this is so cool.. I like the story too darlin!
DragonFlyer replied
Thanks Linaji! I’ very glad you like it – I like it that there are friendly and community aspects to be found in parts of inner city life that are sometimes considered not so ‘nice’...

Clare Colins
Interesting Pov K. I like that there is a touch of warm and a touch of cold colour in amidst the gloomy grey/black. I say ….well done!
DragonFlyer replied
Thanks Clare – the person who has LOTS more experience at this type of image than me… that’s just what these old laneways are like – warm rusted corrugated iron that’s falling apart, cold fresher metal – cool blue graffiti in this one – and I really like the touch of the warm and welcoming lights in the window of the cafe across the street at the other end…

Jan Timmons
Great composition, K! Thought perhaps I should comment here as well as in the forum. You found and noticed an excellent subject – at least the way you captured it.
DragonFlyer replied
Thanks so much Jan! It had been ‘sitting there’, just waiting for me to photograph it for the past 8 years (well – the laneway has actually been there LOTS longer lol…) and I really love the inner city laneways with their bluestones, falling down old rusted corrugated iron and graffitied fences… When Freja was a baby – she wasn’t a big one for sleeping. I would spend hours every day virtually sleepwalking her in her pram up and down all these streets and laneways to try to get her to sleep – the drunks and the druggies loved having a mother with a new baby around… my only concern was that if they wanted to touch her – well – to put it mildly – their hygiene left a fair bit to be desired…. ;)))

Thank you so much my friend – I really tried my best to do justice to this place that’s as close as ‘home’ in a way… :)))

makes me miss fitzroy! i lived there years ago when i was a student. I love how the alley ends in the warm yellow light of someone’s house or shop. That really makes it feel like a homecoming – like when you were a kid playing in the street and were called in for dinner. So – colour and no body-parts . . . new explorations. wonderful!
DragonFlyer replied
That’s right – the alleyway was ‘just there’ – begging to be photographed… it’s a cafe across the road showing the beautiful warm light in the window. I think this end of Fitzroy has got too expensive for too many students now – but I lived not too far from here as a student once too…
