As reported in the Gosepl of Luke, Ch. 10, Martha had Jesus as a guest at her house and “was distracted with much serving” while her sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to the teacher. Martha complained to Jesus that Mary was not helping her, and Jesus replied, “Martrha, you are anxious and troubled about many things; one thing is needful. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be takenb away from her.” (RSV) A legendary story is told of Martha vanquishing a dragon some time after the death and resurrection of Jesus—hence the somewhat whimsical dragon dead under Martha’s broom.
