This is the traditional figure of “Christ Pantokrator” (Christ All-Ruler), well-known in Byzantine iconography, and based in this case on one of the earliest known icons of Jesus Christ (6th century), preserved at St. Catherine’s monastery in the Sinai Desert. I have included as a border depictions of grapes and wheat, signifying the bread and wine of the Eucharist, the body and blood of our Lord.
