The original of this icon was made of cut paper, with additions in paint and ink. St. John the Baptist as a saint is in a category of his own as the herald or precursor of Jesus Christ, “the voice of one crying in the wildreness, prepare the way of the Lord,” in the words of the prophet Isaiah.
