My first wedding photo shoot!

I had my first wedding photo shoot on Sunday – No need to tell you how nervous I was beforehand… Luckily the couple put me very at ease and they were so happy and relaxed that it made the job easier for me. My fiance Richard did a great job at acting as my back up photographer and ended up taking great shots which certainly lowered the pressure! Here is the result:

These are 2 great photos taken by Richard:

    Great shots.

I have shot a wedding before and I know how nervous you would have been. I shot digital and black and white film. I was so nervous and focused that I introduced my now wife to the grooms parents as the photographers boyfriend…..how silly I must have been thinking about who I am to her…..

I think I would do it again if asked but I am not in a hurry.

  • Douzy replied

Haha nice one – but totally understandable when you’re in that kind of state. At the next one just don’t introduce her as your husband ;)

Well done Douzy…you’ve done a fabulous job! I was asked today to cover a wedding, but declined and gave them my friends details instead…I’m such a wuss, lol.

  • Douzy replied

Thanks Angela – and I don’t think you’re a wuss – it is tough… and wouldn’t recommend it if you’re alone. I really think 2 photographers are a must, for good coverage as well as moral support! :)

Well, what do you think? Needless worries? You have done a great job, Douzy. I don’t think anyone viewing these pixs can tell you were a first timer.

I like particularly the blur one and the pix with horizon slanted and Sydney Opera House at the back. Personally, I dare not attempt such things at a wedding. But you dared and you pulled them off very well.

Actually, with digital, weddings and other important events are a lot less stressful than before. With film, you won’t know if you made a careless/silly boo-boo until after the pictures are developed.

  • Douzy replied

Thanks Richard – and yes I think if it wasn’t digital I wouldn’t even have attempted it!!

Beautifully done, unusual angles and lighting. The bride and groom must have been very happy with your work, and it’s not amateur at all, thoroughly professional. Richard’s photographs, too. All of it goes from the serious of the ceremony to the lightness and joy of the party of friends. The child’s face is wonderfully thoughtful and bright. The bride and groom laughing together is just lovely. And I love the formal lineup, enlivened by the groom with one foot in the air, starting on the yellow brick road of Oz with his new wife. You’ve preserved their sense of fun.

I have always been a little bothered when a photographer at a wedding is constantly directing people this way and that way for the sake of the photo. I have always felt that their job is to document more then direct. While there are always going to be some posed shots in a wedding portfolio, it is refreshing to see that you let the action unfold. For example in the “bride and groom walking down the isle” shot, I could imagine that photo coming out quite different if the photographer were to make a motioning gesture to the couple to look at the camera. It is nice to see them making eye contact and smiling toward the guests. Job well done.

  • Douzy replied

Thanks Inventor – and you’re right I’m not the intrusive type and prefer natural shots as well. They are there to enjoy their day, not think of the photographer.

Haha – practising for your own double act? An SP wedding – now there’s something I doubt has been done before. These are great Douzy – love the high-risk ones best (tilted and blurred) – they really convey a sense of uniqueness to the event – something special just for this couple. They should be thrilled with these. Congrats to you and Richard for such a superb wedding debut.

  • Douzy replied

Thanks Geoff – I’m quite happy with the result, although I think we can (and are very motivated to) do much better. I felt I stayed in the “safe” zone except for a few risque shots. There is so much creativity to be explored at wedding – and yes as you say I think the “uniqueness” is an important part for the couple.
