Primeval Dawn by Douglas Hunt

Primeval Dawn by

watercolor painting 15″ × 19″ on Arches paper

This painting is based on a photo I took of Rossport recently during a sunrise.
It somehow reminded me of how ancient and primitive the landscape north of Lake Superior can appear.
In fact, the Canadian Shield is one of the oldest landscapes on Earth, and this painting depicts where the boreal forest meets the largest freshwater lake in the world.

The way the details, value, and composition lead the eye into the distance is wonderful. Beautiful painting!

This is great. You use watercolour very well :)

  • Thanks. I use watercolour the way I want to, not necessarily the way I “ought to” — the traditional way. It’s more of a dry brush technique.

Well it definitely works well traditional or not; you make it work for your subjects :D
