Coffee at The Madhouse
watercolour 18” x 24” (46cm x 61 cm) on Arches cold press paper
Charlie Wilkins (Canadian author of a dozen books) sits with a coffee at The Madhouse (a restaurant in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada).
We met for the first time in many years, having been classmates and friends in high school in Cornwall Ontario in the sixties!
It was a great reunion in a great setting!
Coffee at The Madhouse belongs to the following groups:

This is a wonderful painting! I love the lighting, the lost edges in the figure, and the interest of the orange bottles. Wow!
Douglas Hunt replied
Thanks, that’s what excited me about the subject; why I had to paint it!
Jim Phillips
This is one of your best Douglas, the highlights and shadows are right on the money. The details like the colored glass reflecting on the window ledge is perfect. Very, very well done. I hope your friend has seen this. I know he would be pleased.
Douglas Hunt replied
Thanks for the compliments, Jim; no he hasn’t seen it yet!

Very impressive piece of work, Douglas. The light and shadow is wonderful and the figure is so expertly rendered. I am in awe.

I very much like this. I’m not a big fan of potraiture normally, but the setting makes a huge difference – putting someone in a real place where it becomes a study of that person at a point in time rather than just the person. If that makes sense. Anyway, wonderful painting.
Douglas Hunt replied
I appreciate your comment; as you can tell, I like the unvarnished “truth” in a painting!
tom burke
outstanding,brings back old memories.
Douglas Hunt replied
Thanks Tom. Tell me, where does one get 10,000 year old mammoth tusk?

Unfortunately its very expensive but legal to buy and use for scrimshaw, I got apiece from a dealer in washing state in 1998. It was 90% useable, 3 feet long about 10 inches in diameter.I sill have 60% left. thanks for asking. My website celtic scrimshaw.com goes into great detail.
Douglas Hunt replied
amazing and fascinating!
Laura Lea Comeau
I still cant believe this is a watercolour!! wonderful
Douglas Hunt replied
Thanks, Laura Lea. Technically, I think you would call it “dry brush” because I didn’t really use a watercolour technique, except perhaps in the reflections of the bottles.
Laura Lea Comeau
you still have monumental patience! thats why I cant do watercolours – no patience!
Hidemi Tada

My personal favourite elements are the expression on his face and the highlight on the surface of the coffee. A very evocative piece.
