Winter Dunes

Winter Dunes

The early evening sun cast long shadows across the snow, reminding me of sand dunes.

Very nice Stan. Fabulous use of contrast. I’m use to seeing these types of images taken of sand dunes which is surprising considering I’m about a million miles away from a desert and it can snow here for 6 months a year!

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

You and me both. Well, ok, maybe I’m only half a million miles away. lol. Thanks for the look and the comment.

AWESOME Stan! I love images like this. Something simple like snow made into art by light and shadows….nicely seen! Now did you make it black and white or is that just how it looks. Hard to tell with white snow and dark shadows! Either way….it is a favourite for sure. Love it :)

  • Shelly Hiebert

    Shelly Hiebert

Yep….I could see it hanging on my wall :D

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

Thanks a lot, Shelly. It looks good on your wall. lol.
Had to work on it to get it to b&w. The original was very high key but I didn’t really care for the effect. The bulk of the pp was done in channel mixer, adjusting the r,g,b channels with monochrome check. The final gradation was achieved using levels – couldn’t get it right with curves, and finally a bit of unsharp mask was applied.

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

BTW; thanks for the fav, too !!!
We just got featured with this in Polish Place!!!

I have never worked with channel mixers or curves….I guess I should spread my wings a little bit :) Hey, and CONGRATULATIONS on the feature! Well deserved :)

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

    Thank ya, thank ya.
That was a surprise and a half. It wasn’t there when I wrote my first reply and was when I noticed you fav’d us. Ya hoo. (True Canadian – subdued – but then this ain’t hockey. lol)

Just goes to show that art is in the mind and great pictures can be found everywhere. As someone else said this would look great as a print.

Really dramatic. Love the hightlights in the snow.

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

Thank you very much, OB !!
As much as I was stuck on film, this would have been a “non-image” in that medium. The sheer amount of flexibility built into today’s programmes is nothing short of phenominal. Gotta love it, once you start to learn it.

Stan this is excellent work! A nice find of pristine snow and wonderful contrasts.

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

Thank you very much, Leanna. This was in my back yard. The shadows were created by the mounds of snow I shovelled. I prefer not to think about that !!

Great work Stan! I was at a photo club meeting a few weeks ago and a guy gave us a talk on channel mixer for converting to B&W, I’d never used it before. So much to learn, so little time..LOL!

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

Thanks, George. Channel mixer might be a little easier to use if you used b&w film and filters. Mostly I just play, and trash !! Sometimes it works.

This blows me away every time I see it- Reminds me of Ansel Adams “Sand Dunes” that was so popular yrs ago

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

    Whoa !!
I’m no Ansel, by any means, but I will have to admit that I really admire his work. In a class by himself, that man.
Glad you enjoy it. Thanks !!

Such a graceful image – and there an interesting ambiguity here. It could be a blanket in shadow … or a massive landscape.

  • Stan Wojtaszek replied

Thanks a lot, Peter. Let your imagination run with it !!
