Earthquake Catfish by dosankodebbie

In Japanese mythology, a giant namazu (catfish) causes earthquakes when he stirs in the mud beneath the earth. The more violently he thrashes, the more violent the earthquake.

The original etegami was painted with sumi ink and water-soluble gansai pigment blocks on a soft washi post card. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines simple images with thoughtful words.

I am a professional Japanese-to-English translator and an Etegami artist. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines thoughtful words with simple images painted on washi paper.

Very cool! I had forgotten about the thrashing catfish story.

  • I grew up seeing artwork and reading children’s books about it, but I think most people had forgotten about it until the recent disaster.
