Earthquake Catfish

dosankodebbie

Sapporo, Japan

Artist's Description

In Japanese mythology, a giant namazu (catfish) causes earthquakes when he stirs in the mud beneath the earth. The more violently he thrashes, the more violent the earthquake.

The original etegami was painted with sumi ink and water-soluble gansai pigment blocks on a soft washi post card. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines simple images with thoughtful words.
