Tsuyu-kusa (Asiatic Dayflower) by

This is an Etegami painting on a soft washi card. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines simple images with thoughtful words.

The words accompanying the image of the Tsuyu-kusa flower (“dew grass” in Japanese) are a quote from the book of Job 29:23 “they waited for me as for the rain.”

Materials used for this piece are sumi ink, gansai paints, and absorbent washi cardstock. The drawing tools I used are a bamboo quill pen and a natural fiber Japanese coloring brush. Dimensions of the original work are 10cm x 15cm (approx. 4” x 6”).

I am a professional Japanese-to-English translator and an Etegami artist. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines thoughtful words with simple images painted on washi paper.
