This is an Etegami-based collage. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines simple images with thoughtful words. The olives were painted in the traditional etegami manner on a washi card, then cut out and glued to Japanese chiyo-gami, a type of washi printed with traditional Japanese patterns. The accompanying words were typed on ordinary printing paper.
Materials used for this piece are sumi ink, gansai paints, patterned washi, colored washi, and absorbent washi cardstock. The drawing tools I used are natural fiber Japanese writing and coloring brushes. Dimensions of the original work are 10cm x 15cm (approx. 4” x 6”).
