This is an Etegami painting on a soft washi card that I covered with the wispy paper used in the art of Chigiri-e. Etegami is a traditional Japanese folk art that combines simple images with thoughtful words, and Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese collage art using thin, colored washi paper. The quote is from William Blake’s famous poem “The Tyger.”
Materials used for this piece are sumi ink, gansai paints, absorbent washi cardstock, and colored tissue-quality washi. The drawing tools I used are natural fiber Japanese writing and coloring brushes. Dimensions of the original work are 10cm x 15cm (approx. 4” x 6”).
