From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Herdwick is a breed of domestic sheep native to the Lake District of Cumbria in North West England. The name “Herdwick” is derived from the Old Norse herdvyck, meaning sheep pasture. Though low in lambing capacity and wool quality when compared to more common commercial breeds such as Merino sheep, Herdwicks are prized for their robust health, their ability to live solely on forage, and their tendency to be territorial and not to stray over the difficult upland terrain of the Lake District. An integral part of the cultural identity of the Lake District, 95% of all Herdwicks are found around the Coniston Fells.

I love these creatures, & you will see why if you look at my Herdwicks shot (one of many). My namesake is now two-&-a-half years old, & pays no attention to me when I visit. After her first shearing in the summer of 2009, she went through the inevitable transition & became lighter & greyer, though she’s still young enough to have traces of the dark wool. This little flock is among that 5% that live outside Cumbria. I do have a current picture of her, at least we think it’s she, taken this past October, but I haven’t posted it. Wonderful shot of these wool-balls.
