Y Bont Fawr – Llanrwst Bridge
Built of roughly coursed local slate and gritstone rubble, the steeply ramped Llanrwst Bridge, or Y Bont Fawr, with its three segmental arches and cut-waters has dominated the life of the market town since it was first built in 1636.
From the ’ Calendar of Wynn Papers’ we find that there was an earlier bridge. The paper is dated 1626 ten years before the erection of the present bridge.
The date 1636 is found twice on the bridge together with the Stuart Arms with the initials ‘CR’ (Carolus Rex/King Charles) and the Prince of Wales feathers flanked by the intials ’CP (Carolus Princeps / Prince Charles). The sundail is much later and celebrates the tercentenary of the bridge.

From ’The Historic Architecture of Wales’ by J.B.Hilling is found the following:
‘Throughout Wales, many other bridges were built or rebuilt in the sixteenth and seventeenth century, but none approaches the supreme confidence of the Pont Fawr at Llanrwst, nor its elegance.’
