Bolton Abbey North Yorkshire by

Bolton Abbey was founded in 1151 by the Augustinian order, on the banks of the River Wharfe. The land at Bolton, as well as other resources, were given to the order by Lady Alice de Romille of Skipton Castle in 1154.1 In the early 14th century Scottish raiders caused the temporary abandonment of the site and serious structural damage to the priory.2 The seal of the priory featured the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Child and the phrase sigillum sancte Marie de Bolton.3

The nave of the abbey church was in use as a parish church from about 1170 onwards, and survived the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Beautiful shot of this old abbey – do you know the history of it – no doubt it could tell some tales.

  • Bev…. I would have to look the history up, if you would like the history I will and BM it to you.

Thank you for the offer – I just wondered about its age and how it got to be like it is – I know your history dates back so much further than ours and it intrigues me. I can probably google it so as not to put you to any trouble – its a great shot!
