Byland Abbey is one of the old monisteries which were situated in Yorkshire.
The spectacular Byland Abbey is one of the three great monasteries of the North. The ruins of this ancient monastic house stand beneath the beautiful Hambleton Hills.
Byland was founded in 1134 and was built in the New Gothic style of architecture. It was famous in its day for sheep-rearing and exporting wool and its abbey church was amongst the most impressive in Cistercian Europe. Stunning features not to miss include the elaborate mosaic tiles in the south transept and the great rose window in the west front. You can also explore the remains of fishponds, dams and lakes built to drain the marshy land on which the abbey was built.
