Thanks a lot Josh… I have been toying with the feeling of cutting it into sections; mostly likely, will work on it as a whole, 1st. Though physical space for doing so, is a somewhat-issue… maybe playing with it, folded up, is another way…….LOL, “it unfolds”

How do you like working with raw unstretched canvas? I’ve been considering giving it a try. I love the way the elements work together in this.
I prefer rucanvas. I like to have the wall (hard surface) behind it, for ‘drawing’..etc… and for some reason I have never cared for, personally, a gessoed ground… something about the ‘natural’ quality of the fabric; the resistance of it; and the color….Thanks Alanps: (it poses a “problem” for hanging in places that have not been open to this… same with paper… for awhile i had to mount everything, and this took away completely from my intention with making them right on the wall… I was both trying to bring drawing to the status of painting and at the same time, take away the “preciousness” of a piece (if that makes sense?) O
…so …none of this work has ever been shown (except the ‘halifax series’, in halifax, at NSCAD, right after i produced them… my British painting ‘instructor’, that summer, said…“not bad, for an american”…HA… I “hated”, that, at the time…he also said that my stuff looked like Helen Frankenthaler because I used the raw canvas…HA!! …I often used white raw canvas… very nice! too… ….honestly, a woman had to be really ‘tough’ in the seventies, in her personality, and i was not… and i am completely grateful that i was not…LOL!!!
first this painting…makes me cry…it is so lovely…so creative!!! thanks for all the tips with raw canvas…i might have a go!!. ..I must check out Helen F…..thanks for help…love your comments re the .‘preciousness’ piece….

sorry…….when you work with raw canvas do you tape it on a board or nail it??? Thanks Doreen
hi Shylie, I used to use push pins or small tack nails to attach it to the wall to work on. Most of the time, i didn’t use tape for canvas, because i wanted to paint off the edge… though i tended to use tape on paper, cos i wanted the rough ‘border’ in it…or the tape itself, to be part of the piece (and cos of the ‘tear’ factor, though I often used tacks or push pins for paper too!… I would think both could work on a board… guess the nails make it easier to get a good stretch out of it?? (although, depends… sometimes, allowing the canvas to put up some resistance)…HA! Cool
ps:… I am using nails with this piece…and the surface behind it is not smooth, too (that always plays in to the spontaneous nature of it… depending on what you want to do)
