the bleacher bum entrance at wrigley field, home of the chicago cubs…the bleachers sit just above the fabled ivy covered outfield walls and just below the historic scoreboard…to enter, you must go round the back to the corners of waveland and sheffield, just across the street from murphy’s bar…thru the turnstyle and up the stairs and you have arrived and are now an honorary bleacher bum…take a seat, take in the view, listen to the talk around you…history speaks all around you…hard to know who may have sat where you are sitting…bill veck favored the bleachers at wrigley, maybe he sat where you are sitting…the bleacher bums were the subject of a play produced at the now defunct “organic theater”…“bleacher bums” was written by and featured then unknown chicago actors dennis franz and joe mantegna…the play takes place on one afternoon in the sun while sitting in the bleachers ever hopeful of a win…while poking fun at their team that is seemingly incapable of pulling off a post season bid, this tale of “loveable losers” speaks to the hopes and dreams of every baseball fan that yearns for the taste of a world series entry…the cubs have had their share of missed opportunities…in the end, it is the view from the bleachers that makes this sort of baseball magical…call out for a beer, be sure to use sun screen and always be on the lookout for a ball with your name on it…duck if necessary…
