a wonderful selection of work which makes a great calendar Donna. My fave is July.
I have to tell you this… A couple of days ago, I went to Egon Schiele’s exhibition »DAS UNRETTBARE ICH« (The unseparable “I”) in Kunstbau. He also had some drawings of chairs. I instantly thought of you and your chairs. Chairs are not really my cup of tea. I like your chairs, especially the ones on musical partition that refer to a concert, but lets say I prefer portraits…I have this … lets say… compulsion or necessity: almost every time I want to paint, I first have to think about what I should paint, why I would paint it, what I want to express with it, what it means, how I could paint it, whether I am able to paint it as I want. It is a quite painful procedure, because it often ends into me not painting at all, if I cannot find enough reasons to paint. This is what I admire in your procedure, a freewheeling painting of everybody and everything that inspires you in the moment, with a very free and instinctive line that with the years grew to be a very knowing and independent line. But still, in front of Egon’s chairs, in front of your chairs, I have to think, “Why are they painting chairs? Are they trying to express something through the chairs, that I just don’t get?”. So I asked a friend, who also knows and likes your art, and he said that people paint chairs perhaps as a painting exercise, for instance to draw different perspectives. My reply was, do you really think that Donna has any need or interest to make perspective exercises? So still after so many words that I am bothering you here with, after so many discussions and thinking, I still find those chairs quite disturbing because I don’t understand what they mean… Probably not everything has to mean something and not everything was painted for a meaning – I’ll have to live with this. Sorry for my morning rambling. You’ll probably think I am nuts and you might have right.
