The tawny grasses of this eastern Tennessee hillside are illuminated by the last golden rays of the sun on this overcast January afternoon. I love how the sun can slip beneath cloud cover at the very last moment, a warm gift after a chilly day. The bright green areas are cover crops, planted by farmers who protect their land and nourish the soil during the winter.
