HMSM Ocelot: Royal Navy Submarine by

HMSM Ocelot Royal Navy Submarine.
Used during the Cold War with the folks who are now our friends, the Russians.

Captured at Chatham Royal Historic Dockyard. Kent, UK.

Joining in 1976, I served in the Royal Navy for 17 1/2 years, from 1980 to 1992 on Submarines. My boats were Swiftsure Class and Trafalgar Class, Hunter Killer boats, Nuclear Powered. It was great fun sparring with our friends the Russians during this time, but I’m just sooooo glad we didn’t actually go to war, it was just a cold war. Now we are all friends and long may it be that way. Peace to everyone.

Much of our adventures can be read about in the Book The Hunt for Red October

Nikon D700 with 28-300mm Lense, ISO 320, 1/80th sec, f/8.0, 28mm, handheld.

  • Chatham Dockyard is an awesome place. I first experienced it in 1975 just before I joined the RN.

Beautiful to see Don. Very nicely taken and processed. How about doing some Photoshopping by cutting the submarine out and placing it on the surface of an ocean? That would look sensational!

  • Hi Peter, I’ve already got some shots of my boats at sea, I may post them later:-) It was weird going around this old craft, I even had a dream that I was back on-board again that night. LOL.

Incidentally I’ve lost count of the number of times I read The Hunt for Red October and watched the movie.

  • Me too:-) Because it’s so close to what we were actually upto in the Cold War.

How interesting! I’ve read the book a good few times too, and a few other sub books too. My hat is off to you Don, I don’t think I could hack a long voyage in a small steel pipe! And a good capture too.

  • It’s a great book and some of the details are soooo accurate, it’s uncanny. It’s not so bad on-board a Sub once you get used to it. Before joining I suffered from claustrophobia, so instead of letting me off service in Subs, they sent me on a caving expedition. I got used to confined spaces and couldn’t get out of the Draft Order. Ahhhhh, but I enjoyed my time in the RN.
