Artist's Description

Giant Oak Bathed in Winter Afternoon Light
Captured at Hall Place Gardens, Kent, UK.

Camera Details Nikon D700 with Nikon 28-300mm Lense. ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/60th sec, at 52mm. Handheld. Picture as is from camera to screen.

After Church on Sunday my wife and I went for a walk in the afternoon in the beautiful gardens of Hall Place in Kent. Such glorious Winter sunshine was bathing everyting, with the amazing clouds giving a great feeling in my soul too. It was bitterly cold so there were not really many people around. We stopped for a warm and welcoming break and a cup of coffee in the little cafe. On a good day you can go out and sit on the veranda and watch the ducks and geese, but not today, it was far too cold. They always have a great selection of home baked cakes and we indulged in a nice piece of almond cake. Yummmy.

The wife likes to be taken out for walkies, but she was a bit sceptical about me taking Niko {Nikon} along, because she knows that I’ll be stopping every two seconds to veiw a scene. However, we had a great laugh at one of the Barbara Hepworth monuments… I’ll tell more in my little Blog and show some more pics too.

Hall Place is definitely worth a visit, but I think the best time is Spring or Autumn, because it’s then that the gardens are showing off at their best. Summer is great for the little garden plots that surround the extensive greenhouses.

Hall Place Information
Hall Place is a fine Grade I listed country house built in 1537 for Sir John Champneys, a wealthy merchant and former Lord Mayor of London. The house boasts a panelled Tudor Great Hall, overlooked by a minstrel’s gallery, and various period rooms. The 17th century additions and improvements by Sir Robert Austen include a vaulted Long Gallery and splendid Great Chamber with a fine plaster ceiling.

Managed by Bexley Heritage Trust, this beautiful estate of 65 hectares stands on the banks of the River Cray at Bexley. Surrounding the house are award winning formal gardens with magnificent topiary, enclosed gardens and inspirational herbaceous borders. In the walled gardens there is a nursery selling plants grown in the Hall Place gardens, and a sub-tropical glasshouse where you can see ripening bananas in mid-winter.

New displays include an introduction to the house’s history and exhibits from Bexley’s extensive museum collection, as well as contemporary art exhibitions. You can find more information about the restoration and development project at ‘Restoration’ in the ‘Visiting’ section of this website

Visitor Centre The new visitor centre in the grounds is also open and offers a riverside tearoom and a gift shop, as well as tourist information. The visitor centre is currently open from 10 a.m. to 4.45 p.m. daily. Last orders are taken in the tea room at 4.30 p.m.

Events There is an extensive programme of events, art based activities, concerts and theatre in the house and gardens. Several rooms are available to hire for meetings and events, including the Great Hall and Great Chamber, which are also licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. Bexley Heritage Trust runs a popular education and outreach service and organized activities during the school holidays.

You’ll love a visit to Hall Place…
