After many attempts to get the exposure right in this seascape with white cliffs, shooting in Apperture Priority and even using exposure compensation, the results were good but I still wasn’t happy. I finally resolved that the best way to get more detail in the cliffs was to go into manual. I discovered the optimum speed by pressing the shutter half-way, then switched to manual and dialed in the that speed, set the apperture and left it in auto-whitbalance. When I got home I couldn’t believe the lovely detailed shot, correctly exposed as well. Awesome! I’ll be taking my time more often and switching to manual. Takes time but I think it’s well worth the effort to take control of the camera now and again.

When you think about it that is more or less how we always used to take photos back in the “old days” of film and pre auto! This photo is a classic and what a great sky, too!
I got home a couple of days ago and This is my first posting. In this situation, which was quite dark, I didn’t have a clue what settings to use so I chickened out and put it on AUTO.
    All the best

  • Oh WOW! He’s back, can’t wait to take a look-see:-) Hope you had a great time Peter? Thanks for you comment… Don.

This is totally stunning, all the detail from the texture of the rocks in the sea and then detail on the cliff face and that sky and clouds and even a little sail boat, a masterpiece. Thank you for saying how you managed it Don, i will hold that imformation when I am out and think on manual sometimes, im not the greatest at that I let my camera do a lot of the work. : ) a Fav

  • Hi Karen, thanks so much for that. Me too:-) Normally, but I was getting blinkies in the sky and cliffs in auto, so had to try something:-) LOL.
