5th November: Guy Fawkes' Night
Bonfire Night
We used to chant this a children, not really knowing the reason:)
Remember, remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
‘Twas his intent
To blow up the King and the Parliament.
These fireworks were captured with Nikon D700 on Streatham Common. I used a tripod and my Nikor 24-120mm Lense.

Zoraida Pesante
What an Excellent Shot!!!
DonDavisUK replied
Hello Zoraida, thanks for that. I got carried away that evening and managed to snap over 200 images of firworks. Some of the pictures turned out blank, however others were just stunning with the beautiful patterns in the sky. Don.

Great shot !!! When I was a child it was such a big event in SA but over the years it has died down completely and I think the reason for this is because there was such a public outcry because so many domestic animals got harmed or killed because of fair ! A year or two ago a dog tried to run away while the owners was not home and got strangled in the gate. There has been such a public outcry because of cases like this that people are not celebrating this any longer
DonDavisUK replied
Hey there Sandra, thanks for that, I know what you mean about pets and animals, our dog used to cringe and hide away on bonfire night. However, I think it’s still very popular here, we had thousands (don’t know exactly how many) for the free fireworks display on Stretham Common. Even now it’s the 8th Nov and I can hear hundreds of fireworks going off. Thanks again, Don.

They dont seem to teach children these rhymes anymore Don but in our day it was a way of making history fun and you remembered it. That is really beautiful. x
DonDavisUK replied
We used to make a big thing of it in Scotland and we always collected wood and money for fireworks. It was a time when a penny for the guy was exactly that, instead of all this trick or treating, we used to call it ‘guyzing’. Still it’s all good fun. Don.
Louise Parton
i remember that bonfire night rhyme too – excellent capture don
DonDavisUK replied
Hey Louise thanks for that, what a great memory you have too:) Don.

Looks like you had a very enjoyable 5th Nov Don, this is a very high quality fireworks image and even better appreciated viewed larger, I see you got the D700, lucky man, if this is anything to go by you are going to have a lot of fun and success with it,
Regards, Rod.
DonDavisUK
Hello Rod, yes thanks, it was a brilliant evening with many new friends from the Church and thousands of Londoners, we travelled to Streatham Common, I took along my trusty tripod and Nikon D700. I set it up to capture at ISO 100 and 2 to 1.5 sec bursts. It was well worth it because some of the images captured are breathtaking. You’re right, I’m lucky (or blessed) to own the new D700, it’s a fantastic camera. However, I didn’t expect Nikon to release a full frame version of the much coveted D3. I had originally intended to purchase the D300, but now I’m so glad that I waited. I’m sure the full frame offers so much more in ability to crop and yet still retain detail. Hope all is well with you dear friend. I’ll be visiting some of your pics soon. Blessings, Don.
Arrowman
Excellent work Don, they are a difficult subject !!
DonDavisUK replied
Hi Colin, Just noticed this comment, thanks mate, actually it wasn’t too bad with a tripod and a good crowd of friends to keep a little space to save me being jostled. Don.
Tom Gomez
Super capture Don, excellent timing …
DonDavisUK replied
Hi Tom, you should’ve seen the ones that got away:)) LOL> Don.
Tom Gomez
Oh, I know, I’ve missed a few in my time …
DonDavisUK replied
Hi Tom, tell me about it! I took over 200 pics this firewroks night and although I got some great shots, my timing was not always spot on and I missed the fireworks and got black sky:) LOL. Don.
Gail Bridger
Excellence !
I live in British Columbia now, and they have never heard of Guy Fawke out here! In Newfoundland when growing up, that was a very exciting night for us kids! Fireworks & bonfires, I miss that! :)
DonDavisUK replied
Hi Gail, I know what you mean, even here in London where it all started the significance has radically changed. Most places don’t have bonfires now (smoke laws), and it seems to be all about who can make the biggest bang. I loved the beautiful fireworks we had as kids, and of course being a boy, I loved bangers too:) Thanks for viewing and commenting. Don.
