Rabbi in his shop in the neighborhood of Mea She'arim.
Constructed in 1874, Mea She’arim was one of the first neighborhoods to be built outside the Old City walls of Jerusalem.
She’arim is synonymous with ultra orthodoxy. This neighborhood is a window into a way of life that was practiced in Eastern Europe several centuries ago. Its religious inhabitants focus their lives on Talmudic learning.
Such devotion to religion and learning brings with it a desire for segregation from less observant people and the changing ideas of modernism.
Me’a She’arim is in another sense both miles and years away.

Love this capture Dominique. Indeed Mea Shearim (Or 100 gates) is a place where time may have stopped… Your description is informative and this capture allows us to see a little snippet of the scenes and people in this neighborhood. Thanks for sharing with the Art of the Middle East group.

Dominique, this is a poignant and very touching image. Thanks for giving me a window into another culture, another time and space with an unyielding spiritual foundation. I look forward to seeing more of your work now that we are both on redbubble. I am hosting a group, the healing journey. Knowing your sensitivity, I believe some of your beautiful photographs and narratives will fit into our group.
