Specie: Southeastern Girdled Lizard
Location: ZOO, Wrocław, Poland
The Southeastern Girdled Lizard is the largest representative of its genus, as it can attain lengths of up to one metre, a large part of which is the tail, up to 70 cm. Indeed, natives of Madagascar call it the ‘small caiman’.
They inhabit forest rivers and streams on the southeast coast of Madagascar. They are partially aquatic. Their long tails are compressed laterally and they can use them to propel themselves forward when swimming. They tend to flee from dangers by leaping into the water, in which they can also go underwater.
The most important danger that populations face are the deforestation and degradation of their habitat, which is happening on the entire island.
